TITLE:                          Transportation Aide

Reports To:                 Transportation Supervisor and Assistant Transportation Supervisor

 

Primary Function:    To perform, under general supervision, school bus monitoring and student and vehicle operator assistance as needed. To assist with the safe loading and unloading of students, and ensure all vehicle activities support the safety and welfare of all persons.

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors daily school vehicle activities to ensure proper student conduct at all times, and adherence to appropriate behavior and disciplinary requirements.
  • Maintains order and discipline subject to prescribed rules and regulations to provide for the safety of pupils while boarding, riding, or leaving the bus.
  • Completes and maintains appropriate attendance records, seating charts, disciplinary documentation, and updated student information as required.
  • Assist the operator with pre-and-post vehicle inspection activities to ensure proper operating conditions, adherence to prescribed Department of Transportation and district standards, and compliance with proper safety standards. Reports the need for repair or maintenance work to the bus mechanic on appropriate forms.
  • Assist with keeping the school vehicle clean at all times including all windows, windshields, rear-view mirrors, headlights, and tail-lights; sweeps interior vehicle floor, cleans spills and body fluids, and empties trash daily.
  • Renders necessary assistance to students who become ill on the bus, or may require help in boarding or leaving the bus to include operation of specialized equipment for students with special needs, i.e., wheelchairs lifts and tie-downs, toddler/infant seats, and seat belts.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications and working relationships with district personnel, school officials, students, and parents. Properly communicates via radio dispatch.
  • Conducts Emergency Evacuation as required in accordance with the Pennsylvania School Code and district guidelines.
  • Completes all necessary forms and reports as required by the District in compliance with State and Federal guidelines.
  • Maintains applicable physical and dexterity standards.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work.
  • Must possess the temperament to work with students and staff exhibiting a wide range of emotions, and the physical ability to perform the essential duties.

 

Work Environment /Conditions

  • The employee frequently performs tasks in seasonally hot, cold, snow, ice, or wet conditions.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.

Physical/Sensory Ability

  • Employee performs task involving the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of sitting, use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects or controls, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
  • Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination and oral communication ability.
  • The employee must be able to climb on and off the vehicle and/or jump from the vehicle during the evacuation procedure when required.
  • Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, odors, humidity, vibrations, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.

 

Performance Aptitudes:

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of safety restraint and wheelchair lift devices.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations and the ability to utilize and communicate a wide variety of reference, descriptive and advisory data, and information.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, discretion, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving a variety of information against sensory, judgment, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak and exchange information effectively to one or more people.
  • Ability to perform addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, and other simple mathematical calculations and arrange, compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data and/or information.
  • Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
