Position: Certified School Nurse
Classification: Marple Newtown Education Association
Reports to: Pupil Services Director, Building Principal
Primary Function:
To provide a comprehensive school health program including the delivery of services to students, including those with disabilities, for the purpose of enhancing health and wellness in the school community. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, and district and state board of education policies and procedures.
The goals of the CSN position are to maintain and/or improve the health status of students, thus enabling them to profit fully from their educational experiences; and ,to promote optimum health status and lifestyles for all students through the joint efforts of the home, school and community.
Qualifications:
- Current PA Registered Nurse license
- Bachelors Degree in Nursing (BSN)
- Certification as Educational Specialist by PA DOE
- CPR/AED certification
- Prior experience is preferred
- Required State and Federal clearances
- Willingness to be flexible with assignment and have the ability to travel to schools
- Excellent organizational skills
- Experience with Technology (ie: Microsoft office and Google)
- Understanding of and adherence to the principles of confidentiality
- Ability to and willingness to lift/ move students
- Must possess the temperament to work with students and adults exhibiting a wide range of emotions and have the physical ability to perform essential duties.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains a comprehensive school health services program for students.
- Provides direct medical/health related services and first aid services to students and staff, in accordance with applicable laws and District policy and/or acceptable medical procedures, including, but not limited to the following:
- Catheterizing
- Tube feeding
- Medication administration: orally, rectally, per tube, intravenously etc.
- Stoma care and irrigation
- Respiratory assistance, including suctioning, tracheotomy care and cleaning
- Cardio-Pulmonary resuscitation
- Participates in meetings to develop 504s, IEPs, and recommends modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations due to a medical condition.
- Develop and maintain Individualized Health Care Plans for students who require special nursing interventions during the course of the school day.
- Conduct State mandated health-screening programs according to state and local mandates and guidelines
- Maintains comprehensive and accurate school health records for every student as well as records of nursing services in accordance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
- Maintains a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document and monitor the effectiveness of medications given at school.
- Examines students returning to school following illness/communicable disease as needed and screens students who present symptoms of communicable diseases.
- Directs non-certified health office personnel (substitutes, non-certified school nurses, aides etc.).
- Participates in the development of health-related policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates and current health practices.
- Provides staff in-service programs on health topics such as bloodborne pathogens, and how to respond to emergencies such as: cardiac arrest, acute allergic reactions, diabetes and seizures.
- Provides health-related classroom instructions if invited to do so
- Offer health information and counseling for students, parents and staff
- Make appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse /neglect as mandated.
- Orders and maintains health supplies and equipment for assigned building use.
- Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, staff and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action in meeting the health and safety needs of students.
- Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies, and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
- Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into special education programs.
- Participates in writing the health component of the Individual Education Plan or 504s as necessary.
- Utilize continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge and skills in both nursing and education fields.
- Prepare first aid kits for field trips.
- Ensure that proper first aid and health care supplies are in stock and re-ordered as necessary.
- Assist employees with navigating the process of an employee injury.
- Attend the Student Assistant Program Training, and participate as a member of the building level team.

Work Environment:
- Employees work primarily in a climate controlled environment except when assisting with student supervision of outdoor activities, transporting students and field trips.
- May require travel to other locations to perform duties.
- Occasional exposure to bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens and communicable disease. Exposure to sharp objects, i.e.: needles
- Frequent standing with intermittent sitting, kneeling, walking
- Lifting up to 15 lbs. Heavier lifting up to 100 lbs. when assisting physically and mentally handicapped students.
- Occasional pushing/pulling, stooping, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, reaching and twisting.
- Adaptable to a rotation schedule involving several schools, nurses, and school personnel and parents/guardians.
